AGRIBUSINESS

Wikipedia defines agribusiness as “The business of agricultural production. It includes agrichemicals, breeding, crop production (farming and contract farming), distribution, farm machinery, processing, and seed supply, as well as marketing and retail sales.”

Calypso and surrounding areas are mainly rural, agricultural areas. With the many farmers and acres of farmland, turkey production, chicken production and hog production, we definitely fall into the realm of agribusiness.

Below is just a small list of retail companies assisting in our local agribusiness ventures:

CALYPSO THEN AND NOW...

Situated in the northern end of Duplin County, the Town of Calypso offers a sense of small town living yet is convenient to business, culture, and Interstate 40. Originally founded around 1890 as Goshen Grove, Calypso became a hub of farm families and local produce. Cotton, tobacco, and produce found their way to the Calypso Depot where they were shipped throughout the eastern United States via the rail system. The Wilmington-Weldon Railroad ran through the heart of town and provided easy access for shipping goods.

Education has also been the heart of the local community. Calypso received its first school in 1908 and is now within the North Duplin School District which has received superior ratings across the board for its end of grade testing. Community support for the local school system, school athletics, and recreational leagues are found in the hearts of the local citizens.

Conveniently located near Wilmington, Raleigh, and Goldsboro, Calypso is a great place to begin a small business, rear a family, or find the joy of a small town feeling. With access to water, sewer, rail system, and natural gas, this small town offers much to the prospective builder, home buyer, or business owner. Local residents also enjoy a newly renovated public park with a walking trail, youth recreation leagues, a strong volunteer fire department and ladies auxiliary, and a local senior citizens group for “Just Older Youth.”

The best advice we can offer is to visit Calypso, which is one of the best kept secrets in Duplin County.

SCHOOLS

Calypso is proud of the two schools within its community.

North Duplin Jr/Sr High School is a superior rated school serving the Calypso community. NDJHS was established in 1955, and has continually grown in size and diversity. North Duplin has always been centered around helping students reach their full potential and goals. Many of North Duplin’s graduates have assumed leadership roles in the communities in which they live. Here, sports are held close to our hearts. The community has always been supportive every step of the way. The students are determined and do a great job of encouraging one another. Despite challenges faced along the way, athletic students and non-athletic students alike remember they are a team, a family, and they must keep the faith through it all.

Fans and supporters of the various sports offered at North Duplin come from far and wide. North Duplin’s athletic history is a rich and varied one. In 1972, North Duplin’s football team won the first State Championship in the school’s history. In 1975, the football team made it to the championship again but fell short of the title. In 2007, the football team finished out the season as state runner- up. Ten years later, our football program took us to the championship once again. Although they finished out the regular season with a perfect record, they fell short of bringing home the state title.

Basketball, baseball, softball, tennis, soccer, track, golf and Iron Rebel offer the students a wide and varied selection of sports activities.

Some highlights from these activities include:

In 2013 and 2014, the girls tennis teams finished out the season undefeated.
In 2014, the school’s Varsity Boys Soccer team made it to the second round of playoffs.
In 1987, the boys basketball team finished out the season as State Runner- up, and in 1989, they gained the title as Varsity Boys Basketball 1A State Champions.
In 2015, North Duplin’s Varsity Softball team made history by winning its first state title.
In 2014 and 2015, North Duplin’s Track team finished the seasons as Eastern Regional Champions.

Clubs also offer students an opportunity to participate. Some of the clubs students can choose from are:

Art
Fellowship of Christian Athletes
Hosa
International NTHS
SADD-Students Against Drunk Driving
Herpetology
Student Council
Battle of the Books
Chorus
Teacher Cadet
Science Olympiad

With an enrollment of approximately 500 students in grades 7-12, any North Duplin student has the opportunity to participate in multiple sports and/or club activities. At North Duplin we are serious when we say, “Once a Rebel, always a Rebel!”

NORTH DUPLIN ELEMENTARY
North Duplin Elementary School is a Pre-K-6th grade school built in 1974, serving a diverse population of approximately 650 students. The leadership team at NDE focuses on meeting the needs of the 21st century learner in a community school setting.

There are four to five classrooms for each grade level, and the staff has one of the lowest turnover rates in the county. Extracurricular activities include Beta Club, Girls on the Run, and Striders. The school also actively participates in Battle of the Books, Geo-Bee, Young Authors, and Jump Rope for Heart. EPIC is a parent/teacher group that is active in the school and hosts an elaborate Fall Festival each year.
